Overview

Please join us on Wednesday 10th May for a conversation between Matthew McLean and Bedwyr Williams, on the occasion of Williams' solo exhibition Older Artist at Phillida Reid, 10 - 16 Grape Street.

Bedwyr Williams works across video, installation, drawing, painting, sculpture and performance. Often layering verbal and visual, his practice is characterised by acute and wryly empathetic observation of human behaviour, situations and environments, both physical and psychological. Recent solo shows include THE SEE WALL, East Quay, Watchet, UK (2022); Milquetoast, Southwark Park Galleries, London, touring to Tŷ Pawb, Wrexham, Wales and KARST, Plymouth (2021); ECHT, Tramway, Glasgow International, Scotland (2014) and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy (2017); The Gulch, Barbican Curve, London, UK (2016); My Bad, IKON, Birmingham, UK (2012). He represented Wales at the Venice Biennale 2013 with The Starry Messenger, later touring to The Whitworth, Manchester, UK (2015). Y Tyrrau Mawr / The Big Towers was first show at Artes Mundi 7, National Museum of Wales, in 2016.

Williams received the Derek Williams Trust Purchase Award in association with Artes Mundi in 2017. His work is in the British Council and Arts Council Collections, the Government Art Collection, UK, and the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff.

Matthew McLean is a writer and editor. He has written for titles including frieze, art-agenda, Art Lyst, ArtReview, ArtReview Asia, and FlashArt and The Plant. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly magazine Frieze Week, and Creative Lead for Frieze Studios. From 2018—2019 he was the Co-Curator of Frieze Talks with Lydia Yee.
