Ella Wright in conversation with Rebecca Birrell

21 Mar 2026 4-6pm

Cedric Bardawil
London W1D 5JB

Overview

Birrill, who wrote the catalogue essay for Wright’s current exhibition ‘Still Moving’, will probe deeper into Wright’s processes and her intriguing way of finding imaginative potential in the otherwise overlooked. “I want to zoom in,” notes Wright. “Small areas of ‘unwanted’ growth in urban edgelands, knotted branches and power cables reflected by fluorescent light in puddles and suburban rivers, moss, lichen and mould, textures in rock and mineral, floating debris. I see these new paintings as an exploration of the strangeness of looking closely at things which might otherwise go unseen.”

Rebecca Birrill has held curatorial positions at the University of Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, The Charleston Trust, The Department of Prints and Drawings at The British Museum, The Jewish Museum, and The Yale Center for British Art. Her first book, ‘This Dark Country: Women Artists, Still Life and Intimacy in the Early 20th Century’ published by Bloomsbury in 2021 became the Guardian/Observer Art Book of the Year, and her upcoming novel ‘Venus, Vanishing’ will be published by Picador in the UK in July 2026.

This talk will be free and open house.
