Lunchtime Talk by Richard Calvocoressi
12 Feb 2026 1-2pm
Calvocoressi, an authority on the work of Baselitz, is a former Tate curator and was previously director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. He authored the monograph 'Georg Baselitz’ published by Thames and Hudson in 2021.
Calvocoressi will explore the role of autobiography and memory in this body of work, which brings two of Baselitz’s most enduring motifs, the eagle and the artist’s wife, Elke, together for the first time. Through the eagle, Baselitz explores his German identity and the history of totalitarian regimes, embracing the Gothic tradition of ‘Hässlichkeit (ugliness),’ to consciously acknowledge rather than deny his German roots.
