John Maclean | Limited Edition Prints
28 Nov-20 Dec 2025
PV 27 Nov 2025, 6-8pm
The Approach is delighted to present two new limited edition prints by John Maclean, each reflecting his distinctive approach to landscape and narrative.
Maclean is best known for his densely coloured small-scale watercolour paintings on board and similarly proportioned works on found photographic paper. Drawing from salvaged postcards and found internet imagery, he transforms modest source material into evocative scenes that suggest fragments of a larger, unseen story. Though intimate in scale, the works open expansive imaginative worlds, offering viewers a single vignette from a broader, cinematic timeline.
Each unique edition is a hand tinted photographic silkscreen on watercolour brushed paper and will be on display in The Annexe alongside works on paper and board.
John Maclean (b. 1972, Perth, Scotland) lives and works in London. He graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1994 and the Royal College of Art in 1996. Recent solo exhibitions include: Works on Paper, The Approach, London, UK (2024); New Paintings, Part II, The Approach at 9 Place des Vosges, Paris, FR; New Paintings, Part I, The Approach, London, UK (both 2023); White Rooms: John Maclean, White Columns, New York (NY), USA (2022). Recent group exhibitions include: Ghost, Jarvis Art, New York, USA; One thing touches another thing, Maya Frodeman Gallery, Jackson Hole (WY), USA (both 2025); La Fin, Part 1, French Riviera, London, UK (2023).
Maclean’s sensitivity to narrative is inseparable from his parallel career in film, directing acclaimed films such as Slow West (2015) and Tornado (2025). His visual practice is equally informed by his background in music as a founding member of the influential group The Beta Band (1996–2005, 2025–present).
