Artist talk: Anna Zimmerman

6 Mar 2026 6.30-7.30pm

The British Museum
London WC1B 3DG

Overview

Hear Anna Zimmerman explore themes of power, identity and femininity in her historic-inspired artworks at this in-conversation event.

Zimmerman works exclusively with charcoal making detailed, labour-intensive drawings, often using historical portraits as a source of inspiration. Having previously made theatre costumes, she's an experienced seamstress and makes the costumes that feature in her work herself, stating that this is part of her artistic process as she works so slowly she can never use live models. Zimmerman is in conversation with Project Curator of Nordic noir, Dr Aisha Bornø, who is a specialist in Nordic modernism.

This talk forms part of the public programme supporting the free exhibition Nordic noir: works on paper from Edvard Munch to Mamma Andersson (until 22 March 2026).

The British Museum would like to thank the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Embassies for supporting the travel of artists to facilitate the public programme for Nordic noir.
