Diane Arbus (1923–1971) is widely regarded as one of the most original and significant artists of the twentieth century. Her bold black-and-white photographs demolish aesthetic conventions and upend all certainties. Since her death in 1971, her work has been exhibited worldwide and is held in major institutional collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; National Gallery, Washington, DC; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; Tate Gallery, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and numerous others.
