Artist talk: Sverre Malling and Jeff Olsson
31 Oct 2025 6.30-7.30pm

This Halloween join Sverre Malling and Jeff Olsson in conversation with curator Jennifer Ramkalawon to delve into all things dark, melancholy and mythical.
It's perhaps no wonder that many Nordic artists dwell on the mysterious and sometimes macabre in an environment which is enveloped in darkness for six months of the year.
Sverre Malling creates work notable for its precision and intricacy, bringing together references to classical art, botany, the occult, psychedelia, folk art and children's illustrations. Jeff Olsson's evocative black and white night-time scenes in charcoal, graphite and dry pastel delve into humans' relationship with nature.
This talk is chaired by Jennifer Ramkalawon, British Museum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Nordic Graphic Art, and forms part of the public programme supporting the free exhibition Nordic noir: works on paper from Edvard Munch to Mamma Andersson (until 22 March 2026).
The British Museum would like to thank the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish Embassies for supporting the travel of artists to facilitate the public programme for Nordic noir.
