Overview

Alice Amati is pleased to host the exhibition Incidental Music presented by Devonshire Collective, Eastbourne, a unique collaboration between the two organisations to strengthen relationships in the ecosystem and provide exposure to artists and institutions working outside the capital.

Incidental Music is a group exhibition featuring works by  Carla Wright, Richard Phoenix, James William Murray, Kaixiang Zhang, Babalola Yusuf, that explores the feeling and sensory world around us, bringing together artistic practices that share an affinity for deep listening, embodiment and transformation. A term sometimes used in theatre and film, incidental music has a subtle poetic force: a soundscape that elicits a particular emotional response to an unfolding narrative, without the audience becoming conscious of it. Spanning object making, ceramics, painting, sound and durational intervention, each artist in their own particular way seeks to tune into an emotional frequency that is otherwise hidden or ungraspable.

The exhibition presents a snapshot of the vibrant creative scene along the South Coast of England, showcasing artists working in Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings and Brighton. Incidental Music attempts to capture a sense of place and practice: how the landscape and creative environment of the region informs, and is shaped by, the people making work here today. Alongside the exhibition is a curated display by Collective Books, Devonshire Collective's artist-led and open submission bookshop, stocking a range of publications, zines and poetry by artists across the region.

Regarding this collaboration, Edward Ball, Director of Devonshire Collective, and Alice Amati, Founder and Director of her eponymous gallery, said:

"What excites and drives us as an organisation is seeing artists from our region spread their wings and reach new heights. This collaboration with Alice Amati is an opportunity to do just that, while also bringing a vibrant community of practitioners to London audiences, in some cases for the first time. We are proud to watch the artists we work with go on to achieve brilliant successes, from solo exhibitions at Chisenhale, Goldsmiths CCA and Tate Britain, to winning prestigious awards including the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award and securing gallery representation. It's increasingly hard to make a living as an artist, and it is our hope through collaborations such as this, between non-profit and commercial, to model new approaches that can help artists sustain a career." – Edward Ball

“I am really thrilled to collaborate with Devonshire Collective in bringing a wonderful group of artists— working from outside of London—to the city, some for the first time. As a new type of collaboration for us, this perfectly aligns with the gallery programme, which was built around supporting artists from beyond the capital, as well as with our shared ethos: both organisations are committed to creating opportunities for artists that can have a lasting, positive impact on their careers.

My vision is to continue this model of cross-sector collaboration, enabling us to learn from one another and explore sustainable ways of fulfilling our shared goal—while always offering the local public something new to discover and engage with, hopefully long after the show has ended." – Alice Amati
