The Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2024 returns for its 17th year, showcasing the work of talented young photographers, gifted amateurs and established professionals in the very best of contemporary photography.
This year the annual Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize In Focus display, highlights new portraits by American photographer Diana Markosian. Join us for an 'in conversation' with the artist and Fiona Rogers, the V&A’s Parasol Foundation Curator of Women in Photography, as she presents this new body of work to the public for the first time, revealing her inspiration, approach and wider influences. The series is a sequel to her first monograph, the award-winning Santa Barbara, a photographic recreation of her mother's journey from post-Soviet Russia to the US, as the artist related to her mother for the first time as a woman rather than parent. In this evening's conversation, Markosian takes us behind the scenes as she attempts to build a relationship with her long lost father over a decade with each visit revealing new complexities about the parent she lost.
Diana Markosian is at the forefront of a new generation of photographers and directors, pushing the boundaries of documentary storytelling. By encapsulating different styles and mediums, Markosian has created a unique approach to image making. Her first monograph, Santa Barbara, was published by Aperture and selected as the top book of the year by MoMA and Time Magazine. She is a regular contributor to Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. Markosian is currently working on her second monograph and in development on a feature film. She holds a masters degree from Columbia University in New York.
