About

St Jame’s, Piccadilly is a Grade 1 listed 17th-centruy church designed by Sir Christopher Wren. It includes 17th-century works by Grinling Gibbons that are recognised as being important works of national heritage value. The church also runs a programme of contemporary art.

Curated by the Revd Dr Ayla Lepine, Associate Rector of St James’s, educated as an art and architectural historian in addition to being a member of the clergy, the Art in the Side Chapel series expresses the transformative power of creativity and faith, emphasising diverse perspectives and highlights both emerging and established artists.

It presents four exhibitions a year relating to the seasonal calendar of the church’s diverse activities as well as occasional additional projects.

Art in the Side Chapel invites artists to show in the Side Chapel with a focus on presenting new work in a solo context. In keeping with the proto-Enlightenment style of Wren’s design, the side chapel is at once a distinct space within the body of the church but also transparent, visibly, and without obvious separation from the main light-filled space.
