Olivia Laing: The Art of Resistance

8 Jul 2023 4-5.30pm

Hayward Gallery
London SE1 8XX

Overview

Olivia Laing, Clare Farrell and Adrian Fisk discuss protest, freedom of expression and the climate crisis, in a conversation chaired by Cedar Lewisohn.

Join us to hear a vital discussion on how can art be used to both engender and document acts of resistance.

Olivia Laing spent the summer of 1997 in a tree protesting the destruction of much woodland to make way for a strip of road.

Today, Extinction Rebellion co-founder Clare Farrell is at the forefront of the movement campaigning for the preservation of our planet.

Photojournalist Adrian Fisk has borne witness to both through his camera lens, focusing on geo-political visual analysis of South Asia as well as documenting the British environmental movement from 1995 to 1999.

The discussion takes in the evolution and intensifying criminalisation of disruptive protest, what this means for freedom of expression and the climate crisis, and how art can be used to both engender and document acts of resistance.

This event is delivered in partnership with English PEN, one of the world's oldest human rights organisations.

The founding centre of PEN International, a worldwide writers’ association with 147 centres in more than 100 countries, English PEN protects freedom of expression whenever it is under attack, supports writers facing persecution around the world, and celebrates contemporary international writing.
