Overview

Almine Rech London is delighted to present Paul de Flers first solo show in London and fourth solo show with the gallery, on view on view from March 1 to April 8, 2023.

Paul de Flers is known for his paintings which present tropical landscapes through opaque textures, created by his technique of pure pigment on linen canvas. After completing his studies in Public Law and History of Art in Paris, Paul de Flers dedicated himself solely to painting. In scenes of bathers in subdued aquamarine environments, and animals caught wrestling at night in dim forest clearings, de Flers reinvents subjects found in the work of French masters such as Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. Inspired by his experiences in rural Italy and Brazil, de Flers’ imagery is saturated and feels intensely humid. As well, it recalls the colour saturation, shadows and glare of these places.

In 2016, he was a finalist for the Painting and Drawing Celeste Prize, and exhibited his work at the OXO tower in London. De Flers has held exhibitions internationally, including at the Czech Cultural Center in Prague; the Santa Maria della Scala Museum, Siena, Italy; the Armazém da Cultura and the French Alliance ALDEOTA, Fortaleza, Brazil; and the Agatha + Paul in Paris (in partnership with Agatha Ruiz de la Prada), among other venues. He completed a residency in the Serigrafia Fallani in Venice in 2017 and is currently in an artist residency in Lisbon.
