Overview

Alison Jacques is pleased to announce a career-spanning solo exhibition of work by Nicola L. (b. Mazagan, Morocco, 1932; d. Los Angeles, US, 2018), the artist’s inaugural solo show at the gallery and her first in the UK to date. The exhibition will be on view from 28 April–4 June with a preview from 6–8pm on 27 April.

During her lifetime, Nicola L. had solo exhibitions at SculptureCenter, New York, curated by Ruba Katrib (2017), and Brooklyn Art Museum, New York (2005), and was included in ground-breaking institutional group exhibitions including ‘Elles’, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2009), and ‘The World Goes Pop’, Tate Modern, London (2015). Nicola L. performed throughout her life, including at the 57th Venice Biennial; Tate Modern, London; Biennial de Havana, Havana; Secession, Vienna; European Parliament, Brussels; MAMCO Genève; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Nice.

Recently, her work was included in ‘Domestic Drama’, Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz (2021–22); ‘Sensing Out Loud: I Am the Last Woman Object’, NEST, Zurich University of the Arts (2021–22); ‘She-Bam Pow POP Wizz!’, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nice (2021); ‘Made in L.A. 2020: a version’, Hammer Museum and The Huntington, LA (2021); and ‘Amazons of Pop! Women artists, superheroines, icons 1961–1973’, Kunsthalle zu Kiel (2021), which will tour to Kunsthaus Graz on 22 April. Her work is currently included in ‘Our Silver City, 2094’, Nottingham Contemporary (until 18 April); and ‘Shell’, Del Vaz Projects, Santa Monica (until 16 April).
