Overview

Get an expert’s take on Richter, regarded as one of the most important and influential painters working today, who features in our exhibition Gerhard Richter: Drawings, 1999 – 2021.

Drawing has long been an important and varied facet of Richter’s practice, spanning works in pencil, pools of ink and overpainted photographs.

Join Michael Newman to explore how, through a combination of experiment and tradition, Richter’s drawings provide us with new ways of understanding his working process and abstract compositions.

Michael Newman is professor of art writing at Goldsmiths, University of London. He has written a new text on Gerhard Richter’s drawings which is published in the exhibition catalogue.
