Established in 1964 as an artists-led alternative space, it has evolved into one of the most internationalist artistic programmes in Europe combining established with emerging artists.
Housed in a magnificent Victorian school building, it is an educational charity for the promotion of visual art of international significance, playing a key role in the cultural life of the region.
Education is at the heart of Ikon’s activities. Our Education team builds meaningful relationships with Ikon’s audiences that enables visitors to engage with, discuss and reflect on contemporary art.
Ikon’s off-site programme develops dynamic relationships between art, artists and audiences outside the gallery, challenging expectations of where art can be seen and by whom.
Ikon welcomes over 200,000 visitors every year to the gallery and off-site projects. Many more engage with national and international collaborations and online.
Ikon continuously works with artists to develop new audiences, especially within local communities.
