Overview

Where does nature end and culture begin? What does their transmutation hold?
Annie Trevorah's practices address the issue of the anthropological
viewpoint of our species on the surrounding ecological complexity.

Art, science, and technology for centuries have attempted to learn from and
replicate the intricate systems produced by billions of years of evolution. Her works
reference one of the most fascinating natural phenomena—the metamorphosis of
matter and life in the process of adaptation to new habitats. How does synthetic
become natural and vice versa? In the context of the amalgamating crisis of culture
that we live through in the present time, exemplified in everything from ecology and
economy to politics, the exciting ability of nature to not only adapt but thrive in the
face of adversity is becoming yet again a subject of wonder and fascination.
Historically, polymaths such as Ovid, Abbas bin Firnas, and Leonardo da Vinci tried
to integrate the man-made with the nature-given, whether for the purposes of
reaching the skies and diving beneath the oceans. The pioneering Santa Fe
Institute approaches adaptive complexity as both art and science of the future.
They are harbingers of the future where nature’s intelligence is not a subject of
subduing and conquest but of a collaborative effort to make the best of the limiting
conditions we have got. She reminds us of the humbleness in understanding that
what we know of ecology is a tip of a large iceberg.

Trevorah’s works, manifesting as guests from the possible transgressive future, find
themselves in the liminal space between object and process, emanating yet
unexplainable phenomena of life’s persistence despite the mortal challenges it
faces. What can be a more powerful message to convey in the times of crisis and
confusion?
