Overview

67 York Street Gallery presents Plantasia, an intimate exploration of the natural world through pencil drawing. In this close observation, Plantasia, a name born from “plant” and “fantasia”, unfolds as a world where reality and imagination, the cultivated and the wild, live in gentle harmony.

Working in black and white, Atkin interprets natural elements in ways that blur the boundary between the natural and unnatural, exploring environments where design and overgrowth meet. Trees, roots, and organic fragments take shape with a still-life sensibility, with layered marks and careful use of negative space making plants appear as if they have grown there by themselves.

For Atkin, each pencil mark is a step in a slow, gradual process; some stretch with deliberate slowness while others twist or curl with sudden energy, together creating a rhythm that mirrors the unpredictable yet ordered growth of nature. In a world of visual excess, her minimalist drawings invite audiences to slow down and attend to the smallest marks that speak in silence, shadow, and breath.
