Ectoplasmix

Overview

The Gallery of Everything presents Ectoplasmix: a visual investigation into otherworldy energies and extra-terrestrial goop.

From secret illustrations, painted transmissions and unseen albums of séance excretion, to curated contributions from psych-curious contemporary artists, Ectoplasmix traces the enduring influence of this strange substance from the 19th century to the present day.

At the heart of the assembly are the proto-psychedelic portraits of Czech medium František Jaroslav Pecka (1878 - 1960). A century old, but discovered only recently, these pristine private projections were channelled by their maker as celestial evidence of higher realms.

These sit alongside spectral works by British occultist Austin Osman Spare and photographic records by Dr Thomas Glendenning Hamilton, Dr Francesco Ponte and Enrico Imoda.

Other highlights include contemporary contributions by artists Paul Noble, Mathew Weir and Tony Oursler, alongside photographic series by the late Susan Hiller and Mike Kelley - both of whom were fascinated by the symbolic, ritual and social nature of the ectoplasmic event.
