Objects, History, Time explores the relation between visual art and the domestic interior, in deliberate opposition to the non-standardised phrasing of works within Modernist “white cube”. The latter supposedly provides a value-free location in which contemporary art’s intrinsic aesthetic features are supported and indeed strengthened by the gallery’s blank space. In stark contrast, Vestry Street, operating as both public gallery and private apartment, is an ideal “experimental zone” for the bringing together of a diverse range of works and an idiosyncratic space of display.
Among the literary material relating to this exhibition are Brian O’Doherty’s Inside the White Cube (1976), Joris-Karl Huysmans’ Against Nature (1884), London’s Sir John Soane’s Museum (c. 1837), and Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space (1958).
