Sustainable Solstice: an alternative symposium

21 Jun 2025 2-5.30pm

Beaconsfield
London SE11 6AY

Overview

Sustainable Solstice marks the summer solstice by bringing to light some of the strategies in which artists engage to survive, thrive and be heard through fictioning and humour.

Maggie Roberts, founding member of the legendary Orphan Drift collective, proposes Fiction as Method for imaginative sustainabilty, with recall to SYZYGY, a Beaconsfield Commission of 1997.

Luana Duvoisin Zanchi will share her research into the minor Greek goddess Baubo as she considers how laughter and obscenity mightopen up spaces for care. She proposes laughter as a form of resistance and offers the handling of clay as a form of meditation on the subject.

This event is part of Beaconsfield's current exhibition project Manifesto for Sustainable Experimentation. The title is imbued with irony, since making art for most artists is simultaneously unsustainable (due to lack of resource) and yet sustained by the vocational pursuit of aesthetic and political expression. We recognise ‘environment’ not only as physical landscape, but as the social and political ecosystems we inhabit and shape.

Sustainable Solstice: an alternative symposium will involve listening, talking and handling clay. Sign up here by making a minimum donation of £1. Pay what you can afford. All proceeds contribute to sustaining the project.
