A path to a fallen tree

Puente presents its second London exhibition featuring Costa Rican artists Luciano Goizueta and Rene Gonzalez at 67 York Street Gallery. Through their distinctive visual languages, both artists explore a deeply personal journey inspired by their relationships with significant trees that once served as sanctuaries in their lives—a willow for Gonzalez and an oak for Goizueta.
"The mind cannot resist change any more than a tree can stop growth." (Richard Powers, The Overstory)
This evocative two-person show uses the allegorical figure of the fallen tree to examine our complex relationships with nature and ourselves. The exhibition traces parallel journeys as both artists follow paths toward a common destination, reflecting on cycles of life, decay, and rebirth that mirror human experiences of suffering and growth.
From the dense tropical foliage to fairytale-like stylization of forests, viewers are invited to walk alongside creatures and sounds that inhabit these spaces—both physical and psychological. As we travel toward trees that no longer exist in material form, we journey into the inner forests of our psyche, where, as German poet Novalis wrote, "Inwards runs the path full of mystery."
The exhibition creates a dialogue between the works, bypassing key relationships between humans and nature while prompting viewers to reconsider how we understand trees and, in turn, how we understand ourselves. Following the life cycle from external to internal landscapes, from decay to rebirth, these works speak to the intrinsically human experiences of change, loss, and the ultimate search for renewal.
