Carolyn Bunt: Your Ballroom Days Are Over Baby

25 Sep-11 Oct 2024

postROOM / SANDIE MACRAE
London N1 3AF

Overview

CAROLYN BUNT, through the discipline of photography and sometimes neon, is engaged intensely with the act of looking, generating a particular quietness and strength. She takes photographs and then manipulates them until they have a quiet power taking them from prose to poetry. Bunt is an natural artist who is more interested in suggesting than describing to the viewer so that conceptually they drift away from documentary photography into a phenomenon of discovery. How she composes her work magnifies its solitude.  The artist's use of lighting and physical manipulation adds to its irresistibility. Her poetic use of neon has the same restrained urgency.

These wounded landscapes hide the dark truths of secret thoughts. Turbulent clouds prevent these locations from existing solely as beautiful places of natural innocence. Their power lies in the withholding of their stories. She says: "I find inspiration everywhere, as long as I'm not looking".
