Overview
The exhibition explores the idea of middle voice and its potential expressions in visual art. Although middle voice is not formally marked in English (as it is in classical Greek and Sanskrit), it is present in certain ways of speaking and allows to map out a multi-specied agency away from human-centric modes of expression. Middle voice is distinct from the inherent hierarchy of active/passive voices (for example, verbs such as ‘partake’, ‘attest to’, ‘witness’ express an efficacy that both receives and twists). I am interested in how this concept can be applied to our relationship with our surroundings and landscape, and how it can be expressed in visual terms.
