Overview

Performance by Jiaqi Li - MA Performance: Theatre Making

This piece of dance theatre explores classical Chinese dance and the use of contemporary dance practice to explore the oppression of women in marriage and society.

The performance uses the classic Chinese tragedy Peacock ’s Flying Southeast as a starting point, which tells the story of a newly married couple who are forced to separate by their parents, resulting in a double suicide. The second part of the performance is composed of contemporary dance practice, relating to the feelings of a woman in the 21st century on a series of issues such as alienation and violence in marriage. Throughout the final performance in this work, the audience will feel the pressure felt by women in east Asian culture. Suitable for those 14+.
