Earth-reading with Phoebe Collings-James

24 Oct 2023 6-8pm

Beaconsfield
London SE11 6AY

Overview

The second in a series of reading groups with Beaconsfield's Environmental artist in residence Phoebe Collings-James.

Collings-James' ceramic practice calls attention to the earth and its politics – which is where they cross over with academic Kathryn Yusoff, Professor of Inhuman Geography at Queen Mary University of London. Yusoff's recent book 'A Billion Black Anthropocenes or None' (2019)connects the environmental ravages of extractive mining with our universal sugar and coffee addictions; all legacies of the transatlantic slave trade.

Participants are invited to link intellectual and sensory responses by working with terracotta clay during the discussion. All creations will be fired by our local partner Mudgang Pottery, in their kiln, for collection from the gallery at a later date.

Tickets are free, but there is the opportunity to make a donation to the charity Beaconsfield, if you feel able.
