Like a Moth to Light: An Evening with Helen Carnac and Laila Diallo

Join us for an evening outdoors with artist-maker Helen Carnac and performance artist Laila Diallo. The duo will lead audience members through a conscious sensory exploration responding to the Radić Pavilion, Oudolf Field and surrounding Bruton landscape.

Through a trail of suggestions and evocations, Carnac and Diallo invite you to pause, observe, listen and feel anew, to acknowledge your perceptions of the natural environment and to tune into a deeper intuition.

Carnac and Diallo have undertaken several research visits to Hauser & Wirth Somerset this spring to develop this new work together. Their collaboration is concerned with perception and sensation, inviting us to pause, observe, listen and feel anew.

Tickets cost £5 per person and must be booked in advance.

Please note the arrival time for this event will be staggered into four slots: 8 pm; 8.10 pm; 8.20 pm and 8.30 pm. These times are not indicative of the event’s duration, which is 1.5 hours.

The gallery will be closed from 5 pm but Roth Bar & Grill will be open until 10 pm for dinner and drinks.

About the Artists
Artists Helen Carnac and Laila Diallo have been collaborating since 2012. The work they co-create is site responsive and concerned with movement, material and place.

Helen Carnac
Helen Carnac is an artist, maker and curator who has lived and worked in Somerset since 2020. Having set up her studio in London in the early 1990s, she develops projects using methodologies that are rooted in an acute awareness of physical location, place and working practices. Carnac has worked extensively in the UK, Europe and US. She is currently the visiting artist at the Centre for Print Research, UWE, Bristol, UK. In 2019, Carnac was the artist-in-residence at The Institute of Making, UCL, London, UK. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, UK and a member of Artquest’s advisory panel.

Carnac’s recent exhibitions include: Holding Space: Contemporary Enamel Vessels, Springfield Museum, Missouri MO (2023); Like Paper, Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h, Montreal, Canada (2022); Impertinente, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Limoges, France (2022); Meister der Moderne, Munich, Germany (2017); UK Pavilion, 10th Cheongju Craft Biennale with Crafts Council and British Council, South Korea (2017); Edge and Shore, Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK; Dovecot, Edinburgh and Arnolfini, Bristol, UK (2015 – 2016).

Laila Diallo 
Laila Diallo is a choreographer and performer based in Bristol. Alongside independently and collaboratively devising work for live performances, Diallo works as a movement director in theatre and opera. She also frequently works as an educator within the university and vocational sectors. Her choreographic work embraces experimentation and the interplay of the predetermined with the spontaneous, often seeking out the extraordinary in the small and the spectacular.

Diallo’s recent choreographic work includes: The Pearl Fishers, Opera North, Leeds, UK (2023); Emilia, Bristol Old Vic, Bristol, UK (2023); Rigoletto, Opera North, Leeds, UK (2022); ABBA Voyage, London, UK (2022); Wonder Boy, Bristol Old Vic, Bristol, UK (2021). Her recent performances include: The Money, Kaleider (2021 / 2022); Short Film 1:1, produced by MAYK and commissioned by the British Council’s #WomenPowerInCulture for WOW Istanbul, Turkey (2021).
