Tomas Watson: The Light of Greece

13 Mar-25 Mar 2023

Jill George Gallery
London W1T 4RJ

Overview

New Paintings and Works on Paper inspired by the light of Greece, especially Lesbos where he spends the summer months. The Greek Light is a major reason he has spent the last
30 years in Greece.

Tomas Watson is interested in form as it is defined by light and shadow. In his earlier work the shadow dominated with a single interior light source illuminating the immediate surroundings. In this new work, mostly focused on scenes on Lesbos, he has moved to the exterior with a strong light penetrating even the shadows, which are full of saturated colour.  "In Greece the light is all-encompassing. It has a unique intensity which gives meaning to and defines everything. The land, the sky, the sea, your very existence".
