living in fear of quicksand by Maria Amidu

3 Mar-21 May 2023

Nunnery Gallery
London E3 2SJ

Overview

An exhibition by Maria Amidu exploring a fragile relationship to home.

The Nunnery Gallery in partnership with Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives is delighted to announce living in fear of quicksand by Maria Amidu – an exhibition across both venues of new work and existing archive material. Opening in early spring 2023, living in fear of quicksand will be Maria’s first UK solo exhibition and explores the fragmentary nature of memory in relation to a fragile experience of home.

We will be exhibiting five new works: a limited edition print work – 25 years in the making and the genesis of living in fear of quicksand, a film piece, a sound work, a text-based installation and a bespoke paint colour. A memoir of sorts, the print work traces the artist’s early life living on the Lincoln Estate within walking distance of the Nunnery; a childhood in state care in Bexhill-on-Sea; and consequential experiences in her adult life.

The exhibition continues a short bus ride away in Mile End at Tower Hamlets Local History Library & Archives with an archival display of material that has been integral to the development of the artworks.

A programme of public talks and events will accompany living in fear of quicksand to be announced in February 2023.
