Overview

Join Gagosian for a film program with Jake Auerbach, a filmmaker specializing in documentaries on artists including R. B. Kitaj, Celia Paul, Paula Rego, and Walter Sickert.

The four selected films focus on his father, Frank Auerbach and Lucian Freud, offering insight into the artists’ lives and work, and will be screened inside the exhibition Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews, giving the audience a unique viewing experience. Each screening will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Jake Auerbach.

2pm: Freud: Omnibus (39 min.)
This is the only full-length filmed interview with Lucian Freud. It was recorded in 1988 at the time of his exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London.

3:15pm: Frank (56 min.)
This film captures Frank Auerbach’s response to seeing his work for the first time in up to sixty years, resulting in an obsessive painter’s personal manifesto in which references as diverse as Paul Gauguin, Morecambe and Wise, and William Shakespeare are cited.

4pm: Lucian Freud: Portraits (66 min.)
This film analyzes Lucian Freud through the eyes of those who have been best placed to study him: his sitters, family, and friends, including David Hockney and Andrew Parker Bowles.

6pm: Frank Auerbach: To the Studio (55 min.)
Filmed in his studio, Frank Auerbach speaks about his sitters, routine, compulsions and rituals, ambitions, and heroes.
