Overview
On Saturday 10th December at 2pm, Hales will host an in conversation between artist Martyn Cross and Hales co-founder Paul Hedge. The conversation takes Cross's debut solo exhibition at Hales, O happiness! happiness!, as a starting point to discuss his practice.
The exhibition features new paintings that muse on Gustav Flaubert's seminal book The Temptation of St Anthony. Each work begins in reality, with recognizable limbs and elements of landscape, which transform into uncanny scenes. Biomorphic landscapes speak to mythologies, but in Cross's paintings the narratives are knowingly ambiguous. Familiar and mysterious, quiet and epic, scale and irregularity in proportion puzzles the viewer.
Attendance is free but seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis.
