The Screen: Into the Shadows - Us

2 Nov 2022

Overview

This season we delve into the dark and explore psychoanalyst Carl Jung's concept of "the shadow". These films span the last century and probe those ignored or repressed parts of our collective unconscious. What happens when they surface?

We kick this season off with Jordan Peele's suspenseful masterpiece, Us.

Adelaide and her idyllic family of four head to the beach to their holiday home, but things turn sinister when a group of doppelgangers dressed in red visit. What follows is a trippy, funny, satirical, fantastically executed horror and a blistering commentary on race and class in America.

It's hard to imagine another film that deals with the idea of the shadow as creatively, and confrontingly as this one. The idea that we all have a dark side is a well-worn notion, but what happens when that side creeps up, looks us in the eye and says 'boo'? With nods to everything from the Bible to Plato and a mix of cultural references, it is a skillfully executed genius of a film set to be one of the most important films of our generation. The sense that we are implicated in the narrative and the sheer dread that lingers with you is a worthwhile side effect. Join us.
