Overview

JGM Gallery is bursting into colour from 29 June to 10 September 2022 with a vibrant exhibition of works by Indigenous Australian artists.

Colour has the power to lift a mood or brighten a space – from the corner of a room to the expanse of a wall. When the Indigenous people in Australia started to live in settled communities in the 1960s, they were introduced to vibrantly coloured acrylic paint, widening their palette from the traditional earthy tones of natural ochres, still popular in the north of the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

So it is with much delight that JGM Gallery’s latest exhibition, Colour Power 22, puts the spotlight on 22 vibrant and uplifting works by 12 new wave Indigenous artists from the Central Desert Region of Australia.

Jennifer Guerrini Maraldi, founder of JGM Gallery, explains: “For the first time, Aboriginal artists discovered the blaze of colours available in acrylics which helped them portray the burst of floral blooms that appeared after the seasonal rains in their ancestral lands in the desert region.”
