Overview

OUTPOST presents a solo show by Emily Cannell, on the brink.

Emily Cannell (Ipswich, 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Suffolk, UK having studied BA (Hons) Fine Art at Middlesex University in 2012 and MA Fashion at Norwich University of the Arts, graduating in 2019. Her practice combines photography, sculpture and site-specific investigations, working with textiles and using them as a medium to explore ideas around memory, identity and place.

Presenting her biggest installation to date, she has explored scale and proportion using a seventy-six foot parachute to erase and overthrow the imposing vastness of the ‘the white cube‘. She treads in the dark between sculpture, fashion and architecture, taking strength in elusivity and slipping between the gaps as an active choice.

With OUTPOST, Emily has constructed her own world by manipulating the weighty mass of fabric displayed in the space through hanging, twisting and stretching. We are presented with a theatrical and inviting set as size is no prop here, instead, each new angle presents a new walkable peak or trough as if one was hiking in a surrealist mountain range.

Tempting and yet punishing, more than anything Emily’s installation is a gesture. By blending the incidental and the carefully constructed, she creates uncanny, bordering on surreal outcomes, whereby the images stand as both objects and documents. Notably, the work is created using only a parachute, wire and cable ties: a finely tuned collection of materials. The result is minimalism at an overwhelming scale.
