Tunji Adeniyi-Jones: That Which Binds Us

19 Nov 2021-9 Jan 2022

White Cube, Bermondsey
London SE1 3TQ

Overview

White Cube is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones, his first at the gallery. Coinciding with the artist’s inaugural UK museum presentation at Charleston, Sussex, which runs until 13 March 2022, the exhibition features 12 new oil paintings in which luminous figures emerge from organic landscapes or disperse into tessellating shapes.

Conjuring ancient deities, the works’ lush colour palettes include oranges, blues, deep purples and reds. Building on his existing vocabulary of stylised foliage and sinewy bodies, Adeniyi-Jones uses the human form as a vehicle for storytelling. The artist seeks to conjure, in his words, ‘travel, movement and cultural hybridity’ in his figures, the physical forms of which are ‘rooted in a mythology emanating from the West African coast’, informed by his Yoruba heritage and British Nigerian identity.
