Overview

Dóra Maurer (b.1937, Budapest) is at the forefront of Hungarian neo-avant garde. One of the most experimental artists to emerge from Eastern Europe during the past half a century, her rigorous, conceptual practice is based on mathematical and complex system processes. Encompassing painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and film making, the artist’s diverse career has spanned over 50 years. This exhibition features works made between 1999 and the present day with a focus on her 'Overlappings' series – sculptural paintings which explore the potential of colour to influence human perception. Elegant and seemingly lightweight, they create the illusion of layering and three-dimensional folds.
