24 Sep 2016-19 Mar 2017

The Hepworth Wakefield
Wakefield WF1 5AW

Overview

The Wakefield Permanent Art Collection was founded in 1923, and housed in Wakefield Art Gallery from 1932. Shortly after, Wakefield Councilman Alfred Carr stated that the purpose of the collection was ‘to keep in touch with modern art, in its relations to modern life’. This exhibition celebrates this founding ethos of Wakefield’s collection. For more than 80 years the collection has grown through acquisitions and gifts of work by important contemporary artists including: Roger Fry and the Camden Town Group, and Modernists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson.
