A ROOM FOR LONDON

1 Jan-31 Dec 2012

Artangel
London EC1R

Overview

High up on the roof of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s Southbank Centre, a riverboat appears to have come to rest – grounded, perhaps, from the retreating waters of the Thames below. A unique one-bedroom installation conceived by artist Fiona Banner and architect David Kohn, A Room for London is a visionary landmark inspired by the riverboat captained by Joseph Conrad on the River Congo in 1890, a journey echoed in Heart of Darkness. Throughout the year A Room for London becomes a studio for writers, musicians and artists and a site for a series of live performances and readings broadcast around the world. Resident writers, musicians and artists will be announced on a quarterly basis with the first season’s programme launched on Thursday 12 January 2012. A Room for London is a collaboration between Living Architecture and Artangel, in association with the Southbank Centre, the London 2012 Festival and Arts Council England. http://www.aroomforlondon.co.uk
