Overview

‘Can I make something so clear ambiguous? Can I uproot it? In which ways is the baggage that we bring to the new image relevant to the vivid recollections within our cultural context? I am attracted to juxtaposing invented images and readymade images without establishing explicit relations between elements.’ — Arturo Herrera For his fourth exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery, Arturo Herrera continues his examination of modernist legacies and contemporary image culture with a selection of new collages, immersive wall painting and bookmaking. Herrera’s use of collage contaminates the optical status of images by creating a specifically composed aggregate. The contradictory meanings of historical source material often exist in fragmented contiguity with invented abstraction, figurative forms, printed motifs, and animation. For this exhibition at No.3 Duke Street, which displays Herrera’s new book From This Day Forward (2020), Herrera scrutinises the mechanics of print and bookmaking to enrich the liminal space between painting, print and collage.
