Overview

In the first UK solo exhibition by Jörg Obergfell ‘Tower Blocks and Tunnels,’’ the artist uses his unique physical and live sculptural works to reflect upon contemporary big city structures. Jörg Obergfell carefully selects his sculptural materials from the multitude of manmade debris that circulates in the metropolis such as print media, flyers, magazines, cardboard boxes, fruit crates and plastic bottles. These materials are broken into fragments and reassembled to create model like sculptures including tower blocks and skyscrapers as well as smaller city markers such as litterbins and public sculpture. In his detailed sculptures Obergfell uses the technique of model making, creating work on a small-scale, or combining absurd elements to symbolize utopia and dystopia in city architecture. For example Obergfell sculpts a city in a bottle or a mega structure on a treetop, combining two elements to create what could be termed a ‘city-sublime.’
