Traces of War : Landscapes of the Western Front

10 May-18 Oct 2014

Fleming Collection
London W1J 8DU

Overview

An exhibition of work by Scottish photographer Peter Cattrell. After the discovery of his great uncle's name on a war memorial at Thiepval, Belgium during a visit in 1989, Cattrell returned to the Somme in 1996, this time with his camera. The photographs he took that day were the start of a project which led Cattrell to return on numerous occasions over many years, resulting in an expansive and emotive body of work. These quiet, reflective landscapes will be accompanied by a more recent series of still life photographs, exhibited here for the first time. Also on display will be a series of photographs by George P. Lewis on loan from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, which depict the women who worked in transport and heavy industries in Scotland during the war, reprinted by Cattrell in 2004.
