Hansel & Gretel: a nightmare in eight scenes, by Simon Armitage, published in May by Design for Today, is the second book the poet has produced with Clive Hicks-Jenkins as illustrator, the first having been last year’s Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from Faber & Faber. Armitage’s Hansel & Gretel originated as the libretto of a work for chamber orchestra and puppets, and last year was performed on a national tour by the Berkeley Ensemble, in a production designed and directed by the artist.
