11 Apr-6 May 2019

Serpentine
London W2 3XA (Serpentine South), W2 2AR (Serpentine North)

Overview

The Serpentine presents a new project by Hito Steyerl, German filmmaker, visual artist, writer and innovator of the essay documentary.Situated under the rubric of ‘power’, the project explores ideas and predictions at the meeting point of artificial intelligence and human testimony. This project kicks off with Actual RealityOS, a collectively produced digital commission, and Power Walks, a series of guided neighbourhood walks, leading to an exhibition with new video work opening in spring 2019. Drawing on topics such as media, technology and the global circulation of images,Steyerl sharpens the viewer’s perception through moving-image works that combine found, filmed and digitally animated footage. Steyerl’s project for the Serpentine considers power and inequality, beginning from the premise that‘power is the necessary condition for any digital technology.
