Overview

Anti-Academy is an investigation of the work of radical Japanese art practitioners in 1960s/70s and contextualizes their teaching and workshops at Bigakko, Tokyo, in relation to the work of artists teaching in USA and Europe. Highlighting the renewed interest in Japanese art from the 1960s, the exhibition consolidates considerable research in Japan, USA and Europe and enables the culmination both of existent materials (drawings, archival photographs, objects, films, artefacts), and concludes the realization of new materials - video recordings, photographic evidence and interviews with artists and students that will be exhibited and published. Crossing the boundaries dividing art and life, aesthetic and political action, Anti-Academy emphasises on processes, ideas and the ephemeral ‘art event’ positioned between media rather than as commodity or coming out of traditional art making processes.
