Click to enlargeTHE WONDERS OF THE VISIBLE WORLD
Oct 27, 2011 - Feb 4, 2012 FINAL WEEK
‘The Wonders of the Visible World’, brings together artists who use photographic and video-based media to look at the tangible world that we inhabit. Nevertheless, these ‘indexical’ media still reveal things that most of us would believe to be irrational, impossible or unbelievable. The camera lens can, after all, only capture what is in plain sight, and available to the naked eye. Or can it? Perversely, in the hands of artists, the camera lens allows us to ‘see’ the invisible, and to believe in the unimaginable.

Feb 14 - 25, 2012
An exhibition of works by the Time and Being collective. Rooted in the traditions of imaginative drawing and image-making, the group and its international guests all share a passion for picture making in its broadest sense and utilise many forms of expression from images to prose. Much of the work is based around visual storytelling and is without a linear narrative or literary or literal text - the images often therefore, evoke an element of ambiguity. The varied works in this touring show are a mixture of personal and interpretative responses to the myriad themes of myth, magic, habitat and landscape in all its forms. Works include Quentin Blake's unpublished personal drawing 'Women with Creature', Audrey Niffeneggers haunting images and new works by graphic designer, author and critic Jessica Helfands.

DAMIEN HIRST CHARITY
Jun 6, 2011 - May 31, 2012
For twelve months, Charity - Damien Hirst’s twenty-two foot high painted bronze statue - will stand on the RWA’s balcony as a monumental and epic comment on social injustice.

The Spastics Society collection box of a girl with teddy bear and leg in callipers was a familiar site in the 1960s and ‘70s, but fell out of fashion in the 1980s as a disempowering image of pity.

Hirst has remade the splinted girl, scuffed her appearance and burgled her charity box to highlight the erosion of society’s values and put the issues on a pedestal.

Charity was originally installed outside London’s famous White Cube gallery as part of Damien Hirst’s 2003 exhibition Romance in the Age of Uncertainty.

Click to enlargeUBIQUITOUS MATERIALS:JEANNIE DRIVER / CHRISTOPHER LUNDIE
Feb 10 - Apr 8, 2012
The exhibition explores the conceptual qualities of paper: the way which it begins to articulate a complex set of ideas from repetition, materiality, consumption and production while maintaining its strong aesthetic and creative presence as an art object.

Jeannie Driver makes work from A4 waste office paper. This ubiquitous material is a symbol of immaterial production and a signifier of the bureaucracy. Through re-processing the discarded material, Jeannie makes works that reference issues of consumption, flow and waste. www.jeanniedriver.com. Christopher Lundie is researching the relationship between repetition and printmaking. His work challenges the processes involved in print production. The artist enjoys the repetitive nature of printmaking and exaggerates this at all stages of production: inconsistencies in the printing press, ink, paper, and matrix are highly controlled to produce small changes to each edition. Christopher is the SHP Resident Artist in Printmaking. christopherlundie.wordpress.com. The exhibition is curated by Dr Outi Remes.

Click to enlargeSUZANNE MOONEY : THE EDGE OF COLLAPSE
Jan 21 - Mar 25, 2012
Spike Island presents a solo show of new work by Bristol based artist Suzanne Mooney. Her current practice has evolved from an ongoing interest in the potential sculptural qualities of photography and the formulation and mediation of our desire for things. Through careful in-camera composition, glamorous yet enigmatic objects hover within intense and vibrant spaces of representation, unsettling our understanding of both architectural and pictoral space.

HAROON MIRZA : /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|

Haroon Mirza merges techniques, approaches, methodologies and materials from both art and design cultures. Winner of the 2011 Silver Lion Award for ‘Most Promising Young Artist’ at the Venice Biennale, his assemblages combine objects such as furniture and household electronics with video footage and works by other artists to form hybrid acoustic systems that also operate sculpturally. At Spike Island Mirza presents a new body of work in his largest exhibition to date, organised in collaboration with Camden Arts Centre and mima.

Click to enlargeGIBSON / MARTELLI (IGLOO) : VISITOR
Until 1 April 2012
Inspired by the artists' travels to the snowy mountains of the Canadian Rockies and developed during research at the Banff Arts Centre, VISITOR investigates the experience of place: real and invented panoramas illustrate the beauty and strangeness of the natural world. Vermilion Lake is a full-size replica of a trappers’ cabin, which houses an interactive virtual environment including a rowing boat which visitors are invited to row. where the bears are sleeping is a film depicting monochromatic imagery of glaciers, forests and frozen landscapes. Employing techniques used in video games, the exhibition plays with our apprehension of different forms of reality.

Gibson / Martelli work together as igloo. Their first work won them a BAFTA nomination and their installations, video works, online projects and performances have featured in international exhibitions and festivals including the 52nd Venice Biennale. VISITOR is a touring exhibition produced in association with artsdepot. Commissioned by the Henry Moore Foundation and Arts Council England. Supported by The Banff Centre, Canada.

NEW EYES
Oct 22, 2011 - Apr 22, 2012
"The real journey of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes" - Marcel Proust

Through Towner’s partnership with the Blue Monkey Network, an artist network based in Eastbourne, six artists have been given the unique opportunity to get to know our collection and curate an exhibition at Towner.

Taking inspiration from Proust, the artists have created a stimulating display reflecting on the many layers of the artistic process. Including works by Grayson Perry, Eduardo Paolozzi and Eric Ravilious’s woodblocks and tea cup designs.

HAMISH FULTON : WALK
Jan 17 - May 7, 2012
This exhibition, Hamish Fulton's first one-person show in the UK since 2002, will include new work made as the result of the group walks in Kent commissioned in the lead up to the opening of Turner Contemporary.
Hamish Fulton has made walking the basis of his practice for the past three decades, producing photography, text and sketches that evolve from the experience of solo and group walks in the landscape.

TURNER AND THE ELEMENTS
Jan 28 - May 13, 2012
The first major exhibition of Turner works explores the important role that the depiction of the elements played in Turner’s landscape watercolours and late paintings, in particular his fascination with capturing the elements in combination. Throughout his career Turner was considered a painter of the elements.
Featuring over 70 watercolours alongside a selection of signature oil paintings, the exhibition also examines how Turner’s vision of the elements in combination was closely linked to discoveries in the natural sciences of his day.

THE STARRY RUBRIC SET
Feb 5 - Mar 18, 2012
Private view Sat Feb 4 6pm - 8pm
A quote from Milton’s 17th century poem Paradise Regained, “The Starry Rubric Set” refers to the early science of Astrology and the belief systems within which it is orientated. Since ancient Babylon, classical astrology was widely accepted in political and academic contexts, but the rigorous science of the Enlightenment damaged its credibility, disregarding the field as a pseudo-science. Employing characteristics of many other studies including philosophy, theology, astronomy, alchemy and medicine it contains a holistic view of the universe, placing central importance on the individual’s integration within the cosmos.
The Starry Rubric Set includes work by many of Wysing’s artists-in-residence during 2011, who were: An Endless Supply, Ruth Beale, Mark Essen, Rob Filby, Karin Kihlberg & Reuben Henry, Hilary Koob-Sassen, Kate Owens, Francesco Pedraglio & Laure Prouvost, Giles Round, Emma Smith and Cally Spooner, alongside others who will introduce some of the themes of the programme for 2012.
