Ikon presents This Could Happen To You: Ikon in the 1970s. The second chapter in the story of Ikon, the exhibition surveys the gallery’s programme from 1970-1978 and follows the 1960s survey Some of the best things in life happen accidentally (2004). The works of 32 artists will be displayed throughout Ikon’s Brindleyplace galleries, augmented by other installations at Ikon Eastside and Birmingham’s Pallasades shopping centre.

See the Chapman Brothers’ gruesome sculpture Disasters of War (1993) alongside the Goya etchings that inspired it. From late November, a surprise addition will join the display, developed by a dynamic group of young people (our Creative Consultants) together with artist Katy McCall.

Visual Dialogues is a partnership programme managed by Tate Britain working with regional museums and galleries. The programme is funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Children, Schools and Families as part of the Strategic Commissioning Programme for Museum and Gallery Education.

Featuring Phill Harding, Pippa Hale, Helen Entwisle and Emily Speed with more artists to be confirmed over the course of the project.

‘Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is Mystery’ is a solo show by Dinu Li, a UK and China based artist, featuring past and recent works, plus a work from a new commission for QUAD. Li’s exhibition illuminates his continuous research into the structures defining contemporary China’s cultural development. Li draws upon a rich archive of materials including films, drawings, family snapshots, old postcards, and propaganda imagery, to reconstruct a complex world of fantastical imagination, against the backdrop of a historical and political epoch of time.
