THE UNILEVER SERIES : MIROSLAW BALKA Oct 13, 2009 - Apr 5, 2010
Following in the footsteps of Doris Salcedo, Carsten Höller and Olafur Eliasson, Polish artist Miroslaw Balka (b1958) has created the tenth work in The Unilever Series, one of the world's most famous and prestigious public commissions. Balka's installations, sculptures and video explore personal history and common experience, drawing on his Catholic upbringing and the fractured history of his native country. In recent years the Holocaust has played a significant role in many of his works. Balka makes art from everyday and non-traditional materials, for example, maggots, foam, medicine balls, soap and salt.

VAN DOESBURG AND THE INTERNATIONAL AVANT-GARDE Feb 4 - May 16, 2010
'Constructing a New World'.
Tate Modern presents the first major exhibition in the UK devoted to the Dutch artist and lynchpin of the European avant-garde, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931). A radical and multidisciplinary artist (painter, architect, designer, poet, art critic and publisher), van Doesburg played a pivotal role as a conduit for the international exchange of information and ideas. He founded the magazine and movement De Stijl, advocated Dadaist concepts under the pseudonym IK Bonset, taught a De Stijl course in Weimar in opposition to the Bauhaus and forged links with Constructivist groups. Controversial and opinionated, van Doesburg formed relationships with the most influential artists of mid-century Modernism. There will be over 300 works by 80 different artists on display including works by Alexander Archipenko, Raoul Hausmann, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, Hans Richter, Gerrit Rietveld, Sophie Taeuber and Piet Mondrian.

JOHN GERRARD Feb 3 - Mar 25, 2010
Extending from Animated Scene, his critically acclaimed presentation at the 53rd Venice Biennale, the artist will exhibit two new works, Sow Farm (near Libby, Oklahoma) 2009, which depicts a sprawling, unmanned, computer-controlled agricultural complex on the American Great Plains, and Lufkin (near Hugo, Colorado) 2009, a portrait of an oil derrick in the same region. The works, painstakingly constructed by the artist and his studio over periods of up to eighteen months, employ the new temporal medium of realtime 3D. Since his discovery of it in the late 1990s, the artist has pursued a unique engagement with this form, creating eerily compelling virtual portraits, which extend and develop traditions of painting, photography, cinema and sculpture.

DAVID BLANDY : FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE through Summer 2010
Blandy’s work reveals a personal quest for truth and authentic experience via the cultures that have shaped him. The music and legends of blues, soul, funk and hip-hop, haunt and guide his endeavours. Fortress of Solitude – Soul Archive (2007) is at once a library of Blandy’s references and a playroom pastiche of a gallery education space or waiting room. In Blandy’s Fortress, colourful mass-produced furniture and neatly ordered shelves appear like a one-stop self-help shop; there is even a supportive invigilator to guide you through a Guitar Hero session or the selection of a cult novel, album or DVD to ‘get in to’. Everything you need to unpack the various meanings of Blandy’s work is offered to you to read, play, listen and experience. This seminal work was acquired by the Zabludowicz Collection in 2007.
