KATIA LIEBMANN:JOURNEY// HOUSES, BERLIN Mar 25 - May 15, 2010
“Capturing our experience of the constant flux of time and space,
as we pass through, and as it passes us by”
The two series exhibited document significant places and states for Liebmann, both physically and metaphorically. The works featured in Journey and Houses, Berlin serve as portraits of the artist’s personal state of being, conveying a journey not only within urban and rural landscape, but also between past and present.

IRVING PENN : SMALL TRADES Mar 5 - Apr 24, 2010
The format, similar throughout - whether the sitter is a butcher, fishmonger or chimney sweep, is full length, frontal and invariably standing. Penn has created masterful representations of skilled trades people dressed in work clothes, with markers of their occupation. A neutral backdrop, often an old theatre curtain, and natural light set the stage on which his subjects present themselves – an atmospheric ‘visual nowhere’ that Penn was instrumental in popularising as a staple of fashion photography. John Szarkowski, former director of photography at the Museum of Modern Art, commented that Penn’s portraits claimed people were interesting enough they did not need to be photographed with the support of a glamorous backdrop.

ANJ SMITH March - May
Solo exhibition.
MAGALI REUS Jan 22 - Mar 21, 2010
The exhibition 'Background' shares it's title with Reus' most recent film depicting six athletic men appearing like soldiers in training, performing a series of choreographed physical activities in an aggregate landscape. The men are clean cut, a sensuality echoed in the metal elements resting in the sand around them. The unit create tensions through silent strained exertions and uniformed movement. Intensely concentrated and self absorbed, the instructions for the mens' actions remain unclear aside from the need to test their own strength and the strength of the group as a whole. The setting of the sand and gravel is not restricted purely to posing as a background, the material is repeatedly given precedence over the figures. It could be seen that the men are nothing if not models of masculinity, where an equivalence between them and the muted landscape can be drawn. Through the elements of man, material and landscape it is undetermined which of these claims most importance or which is merely acting as the background.
