THE MYSTERY OF APPEARANCE
Dec 7, 2011 - Feb 18, 2012
Conversations between ten British post-war painters.
Haunch of Venison London presents an exhibition of ten of Britain's most important post-war painters, revealing their influence on each other and examining their legacy. The Mystery of Appearance is a fresh appraisal of ten artists - Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Patrick Caulfield, William Coldstream, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Leon Kossoff and Euan Uglow - whose profound work has shaped our understanding of contemporary picture-making. This display includes over forty paintings and drawings, including several borrowed from public collections, among them Francis Bacon's Pope I 1951 from Aberdeen Art Gallery and Richard Hamilton's Whitley Bay 1965 from Birmingham City Art Gallery, and others like Frank Auerbach's Primrose Hill, Winter Sunshine 1962-64 and Euan Uglow's Nude, Lady C 1959-60 which have not been seen in public for decades.

JOAN MITCHELL : THE LAST PAINTINGS
Feb 3 - Apr 28, 2012
Hauser & Wirth is proud to present an exhibition of late paintings by American Abstract Expressionist, Joan Mitchell. Created during the last decade of her life, these large-scale canvasses mark a distinct departure from her more sombre works of the early 1960s. Her late paintings, dating from 1985 to 1992, are replete with vibrant colours, energy and excitement, combining Mitchell’s admiration of the work of Van Gogh and Monet, her interest in nature and her adept skill at expressing emotions and memories.

MICHAEL RAEDECKER : VOLUME
Feb 23 - Apr 5, 2012
At 23 Savile Row, London W1S 2ET.
Hauser & Wirth is delighted to present an exhibition of new works by Michael Raedecker in the North Gallery of Savile Row. Best known for his subtle and unsettling, enigmatic works combining muted tones of paint and embroidery, Raedecker’s paintings explore and push the boundaries of his medium. He goes beyond conventional methods of representing formal elements such as texture and perspective. Through his layering of thread, paint and small, yet aggressive punctures to his canvas, Raedecker imparts an unexpected physicality to his two-dimensional works.

MARY HEILMANN : VISIONS, WAVES AND ROADS
Feb 23 - Apr 5, 2012
At 23 Savile Row, London W1S 2ET.
Considered one of the preeminent contemporary Abstract painters, Heilmann’s practice overlays the analytical geometries of Minimalism with the spontaneous ethos of the Beat Generation and the influences of American pop culture. For her exhibition, ‘Visions, Waves and Roads’ in the South Gallery of Hauser & Wirth London, Savile Row, Heilmann presents a large group of new paintings as well as a video, ceramic sculpture and her distinctive furniture.

HAYWARD PROJECT SPACE : EUAN MACDONALD
Jan 14 - Feb 14, 2012
Euan Macdonald - Open-Tuning features the recent video 9000 Pieces (2010), which focuses on a piano-testing machine in a Chinese musical instrument factory (the title refers to the number of separate parts in a piano).
An exploration of the different meanings of noise, 9,000 Pieces is a sonic tour-de-force that plays with the way we make sense of the world. The show also includes a transcribed 'score' of the testing machine's cacophonous performance.
In addition, Open-Tuning features Macdonald's Brakestand (1999), a video loop depicting a 1970s BMW spinning its wheels and burning rubber - the car furiously going nowhere fast while producing a squealing roar that conjures extreme speed.
DAVID SHRIGLEY : BRAIN ACTIVITY
Feb 1 - May 13, 2012
This is the first major survey in the UK of works by Glasgow-based artist David Shrigley. Spanning the upper galleries, the exhibition covers the full range of Shrigley’s diverse work from the past two decades, including drawing, animation, painting, photography, and sculpture. Shrigley is best known for his pared down drawings (which he has published in numerous books) that make wry and often dark observations on the absurdities of life, death and everything in between. To coincide with the exhibition, Southbank Centre will present the London premiere of Pass the Spoon (5 & 6 May, Queen Elizabeth Hall), a ‘sort-of opera’ by David Shrigley, composer David Fennessy and director Nicholas Bone, featuring singing vegetables, a giant butcher, an ambitious banana and a panic-stricken pair of celebrity chefs.

JEREMY DELLER : JOY IN PEOPLE
Feb 22 - May 13, 2012
A hugely influential artist for much of the past two decades, Turner Prize-winner Jeremy Deller has helped to rewrite the rules of contemporary art in many respects. Inventively collaborating with varied groups of people, he has developed an aesthetic that he calls ‘social surrealism’ that mixes the serious and the absurd while exploring everyday culture and history. ‘Jeremy Deller: Joy in People’ will incorporate his most important gallery-based works to date, and will also include a new narrative slide show in which the artist discusses his many non-gallery projects and interventions. Featuring major installations, photographs, videos, posters, banners, performance works and sound pieces, the exhibition will include a re-creation of Open Bedroom, Deller’s first solo major exhibition held in his parents’ house whilst they were away on holiday.

UTOPIA
Jan 27 - Mar 1, 2012
This exhibition references the revolutionary text by Thomas More. Written in 1516 the book has as much resonance today as it did when it was first published. The exhibition brings together works by Wieland Payer, Steven Dickie, Rowena Harris & James Bacchi Andreoli; each artist exploring the romantic notions or ironic realities of the age old science fiction subject matter.

LIS RHODES : DISSONANCE AND DISTURBANCE
Jan 25 - Mar 25, 2012
Since the 1970s, Lis Rhodes has been making radical and experimental films that challenge the viewer to reconsider film as a medium of communication and the presentation of image, language and sound. This exhibition looks at the relationship of Rhodes’ work to performance, photography, composition, writing and political commentary.
IN NUMBERS : SERIAL PUBLICATIONS BY ARTISTS SINCE 1955
Jan 25 - Mar 25, 2012
In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955 is a survey exhibition of the often-overlooked genre of serial publications produced by artists around the world from 1955 to the present day. From the rise of the small press in the 1960s, followed by the correspondence art movement, where artists exchanged art by post, to the DIY zine culture in the 1980s and early 1990s, professional artists have always seized on the format of magazines and postcards as a site for a new kind of art production.
