JOHN BOCK : NEW COMMISSION FOR THE CURVE
Jun 10 - Sep 12, 2010
In a new project by the internationally-acclaimed, Berlin-based artist John Bock, a modified motor home lands like an alien space ship in the middle of The Curve, where it docks with strange, parasitic structures housing a pub, a noodle restaurant and shops that hang dramatically from the ceiling. Resembling a utopian, plug-in city constructed of found materials and handmade elements, the installation alludes to the original plan for the Barbican’s Frobisher Crescent which was to include a shopping arcade one level above The Curve.
DAMIÁN ORTEGA
Oct 15, 2010 - Jan 23, 2011 to 12:00am
talk/event The next commission in The Curve will be an ambitious installation by acclaimed Mexican artist Damián Ortega. For 31 days Ortega has set himself the challenge of creating a new sculpture over 24 hours. Each sculpture will be inspired by an item culled from the newspaper of that day: whether a news story, a photograph, or a graphic. Over the calendar month the works will accumulate in the gallery to become both a sculptural chronicle of a particular period of time – and a dynamic reinterpretation of the notion of an art commission.
Damián Ortega is one of the leading sculptors of his generation. His Barbican commission follows important solo shows at ICA Boston (2009) and Centre Pompidou (2008), White Cube (2007) and Tate Modern (2005). He began his career as a political cartoonist before he turned to art, and the development of his characteristically ‘mischievous process of transformation and dysfunction’.
Damián Ortega was born in 1967 in Mexico City and currently works and lives in Berlin, Germany. Free admission
FUTURE BEAUTY: 30 YEARS OF JAPANESE FASHION
Oct 15, 2010 - Feb 6, 2011 11:00am - 8:00pm
talk/event Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion is the first exhibition in Europe to comprehensively survey avant-garde Japanese fashion, from the early 1980s to the present. Curated by the eminent Japanese fashion historian Akiko Fukai, Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition explores the unique sensibility of Japanese design, and its sense of beauty embodied in clothing.
Japanese fashion made an enormous impact on the world fashion scene in the late 20th century and designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto redefined the very basis of fashion. Their works will be shown alongside Kawakubo’s protégé, the techno-couturier Junya Watanabe, together with the acclaimed Jun Takahashi, and the new generation of radical designers including Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu, Matohu, Akira Naka and Mintdesigns. £8 online/£10 on the door

TESTBED 1:
Sep 18 - Oct 17, 2010
TestBed 1 is a series of new digital screen-based commissions produced in residence between March and September 2010 through readily available modes of production.
From March to late July 2010 the commissioned artists used Beaconsfield as a creative base in a series of residencies. Limited means, collaboration and audience participation served as a framework for the commissions as our galleries turned laboratories, turned performance and production sites.
TestBed artists’ discussion on 19 September at 2pm
Curated by Dafna Talmor, Joseph Walsh and Beaconsfield.
