THE WONDERS OF THE VISIBLE WORLD
Oct 27, 2011 - Feb 4, 2012
‘The Wonders of the Visible World’, brings together artists who use photographic and video-based media to look at the tangible world that we inhabit. Nevertheless, these ‘indexical’ media still reveal things that most of us would believe to be irrational, impossible or unbelievable. The camera lens can, after all, only capture what is in plain sight, and available to the naked eye. Or can it? Perversely, in the hands of artists, the camera lens allows us to ‘see’ the invisible, and to believe in the unimaginable.
BOB LEVENE : INTERTIAL FRAME
Mar 1 - May 26, 2012
Bob Levene’s works ask us to re-imagine how we conceive of our physical place in the world – of our imagined senses of time and space, experienced as duration and distance. Her works offer us a space where we might imagine other modes of seeing, and of being in the world.
Inertial Frame presents a day in deepest midwinter where the sun sinks over the horizon. The work captures the movement of the sea, sky and islands of the Finnish Archipelago over three quarters of an hour, asking us to immerse ourselves in the landscape. Part of AV Festival 2012.
JAMES BENNING : ONE WAY BOOGIE WOOGIE 2012
Mar 1 - Jun 9, 2012
James Benning is a veteran American film-maker who is recognized as one of the pioneers of independent film in the USA from the 1970s to the present day. This is his first ever one-person exhibition in the UK. His works invite us to contemplate America’s unseen landscapes, industrial cityscapes, and vernacular architecture.
One Way Boogie Woogie was James Benning's first feature-length film, shot in 1977. It set the tone for his future career as a film-maker who invites us to pay close attention to the details of the world, and to parts of our cities that we ordinarily pass by. Part of AV Festival 2012.
